A Cross-Country Kind of Love: Anaia's Adoption Journey

By Humane Society of Ventura County

After 522 days of waiting, Anaia is finally home! The gorgeous Arabian arrived at the Humane Society of Ventura County in October 2024 as an owner surrender. For nearly a year and a half, shelter staff and volunteers cared for the spunky mare, hoping one day she'd find her family. Fast forward to February 2026, when Anaia's future mom, Susan Schoonover, fell head-over-hooves in love after seeing Anaia's photos online. Our staff were thrilled with the prospect of a home for their favorite barn princess. The only catch? Susan lived nearly 1,000 miles away! Without hesitation, members of our team completed the 38-hour round trip journey to Wyoming to deliver 18-year-old Anaia to her loving family. She is now living happily ever after in a home that was made for her, because no distance is too far when it comes to true love!

Working Together to Protect Pets and Prevent Overpopulation

By Humane Society of Ventura County

Above: Photos, Courtesy of Kern County Animal Services Last Tuesday (February 24th), we were honored to celebrate World Spay Day in the most meaningful way possible, by taking action. Our clinic team hit the road to Bakersfield, CA, traveling more than two hours in our Mobile Pet Wellness Clinic to partner with SNIP Bus - Spay Neuter Imperative Project and Kern County Animal Services for their largest annual spay/neuter event. Like many places, Kern County is facing a severe pet overpopulation crisis, with many shelters reaching double their capacity. Euthanasia rates are at an all-time high as a result, with over 40% euthanasia rates being reported in 2023. By the end of the day, a record-breaking 229 pets in Kern County were spayed/neutered, a milestone that prevents hundreds of unwanted litters and positively impacts countless lives. Events like this don't just change one day; they change the trajectory of shelter populations for years to come.

He arrived at the Humane Society of Ventura County (HSVC) with his best friend, Doja, a female Pit Bull mix who was lucky enough to find her home in January of this year. With his lovable personality and unwavering obsession with tennis balls, we thought surely Trouble would find a home in no time. But as the months passed, Trouble's spark began to slowly dwindle. Team USA Snowboarder Maddie Mastro is for the Dogs!

By Humane Society of Ventura County

The Humane Society of Ventura County was honored to welcome Team USA Olympic snowboarder Maddie Mastro last fall for a special visit. Fresh off the slopes and full of energy, Maddie spent time meeting many of our adoptable pups, highlighting the importance of choosing adoption and supporting local rescues. While she’s known around the world for her incredible talent on the halfpipe, it’s her compassion for animals that truly won us over. According to Maddie, her love for rescue began at home. Inspired by her parents, Chris and Eileen, the 3x Olympian grew up in a home where pets in need of extra TLC were always part of the family. That lifelong appreciation for rescue has stayed with Maddie, prompting her to adopt her own fur baby, Pippy, from Pop Culture Rescue in 2022. We're grateful she continues to use her platform to encourage others to adopt and support shelters like HSVC! During her visit, Maddie met several of our shelter residents, including a sweet and affectionate Pitbull named Dutchess and an energetic Border Collie mix named Roma. Both pups were featured in the NBC4 Los Angeles spotlight, and we're happy to report that both have been adopted since filming!  Today, February 12th, Maddie is back on the world stage, competing in the Women’s Halfpipe Finals in the Milan Cortina Olympics. As she takes on the competition, we’ll be cheering her on not just as an elite athlete but as a dedicated advocate for animals in need. From everyone at the HSVC, thank you, Maddie, for helping spread the word that rescue animals can be champions too!
