Working Together to Protect Pets and Prevent Overpopulation

Last Tuesday (February 24th), we were honored to celebrate World Spay Day in the most meaningful way possible, by taking action. Our clinic team hit the road to Bakersfield, CA, traveling more than two hours in our Mobile Pet Wellness Clinic to partner with SNIP Bus - Spay Neuter Imperative Project and Kern County Animal Services for their largest annual spay/neuter event.
Like many places, Kern County is facing a severe pet overpopulation crisis, with many shelters reaching double their capacity. Euthanasia rates are at an all-time high as a result, with over 40% euthanasia rates being reported in 2023. By the end of the day, a record-breaking 229 pets in Kern County were spayed/neutered, a milestone that prevents hundreds of unwanted litters and positively impacts countless lives. Events like this don't just change one day; they change the trajectory of shelter populations for years to come.

This incredible accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedicated veterinary professionals, staff, and volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and of course, the responsible pet owners who showed up to make proactive, lifesaving choices for their animals. Preventing unplanned litters is one of the most effective ways to combat pet overpopulation and reduce the number of dogs and cats entering shelters nationwide.
World Spay Day may only come once a year, but our commitment to accessible spay/neuter services continues every single day. We are so proud of our clinic team for their compassion, expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile (literally) for animals in need. Thank you to the Spay Neuter Imperative Project and Kern County Animal Services for putting this together and letting us be a part of it. Here's to teamwork making the dream work, partnership, and 229 healthier, happier pets.
