The Power of Compassion: Penny’s Road to Recovery

Some animals arrive at the Humane Society of Ventura County with a story so layered it feels like a novel. Such is the case with Penny, a sweet Pitbull who, despite her history, proves that every animal can be resilient, loving, and deserving of a forever home.

Penny’s journey began on a property in Riverside County, where she was found living in heartbreaking conditions. Kayla, a compassionate dog lover from Bailing Out Bentley rescue, discovered Penny and refused to give up until she found the sweet pup the home she deserved.

Penny had recently given birth to a litter of puppies when Kayla first laid eyes on her. She was severely emaciated, and both Penny and her puppies were desperately in need of medical care. Kayla was able to rescue the puppies first, but getting Penny herself required extraordinary determination. In an act of pure compassion, Kayla literally gave the shoes off her own feet to the person holding Penny, trading them for the dog she knew deserved a chance at life.

Once safe, Penny was placed in a foster home with Olivia, where she could finally heal. Not long after, she was adopted by a family and spent the next two years living what Kayla hoped would be her happily-ever-after.

In early February, Penny’s story took another unexpected turn when she was brought to the shelter in Ojai as a stray. Thanks to her microchip, our team was able to trace her history back to Bailing Out Bentley. With Kayla’s help, we connected with Penny’s previous owner, who shockingly decided to surrender her to HSVC.

Kayla immediately raced to the shelter to get Penny. After everything they had been through together, there was no way Kayla was going to give up on this dog!

Kayla reached out to Olivia, Penny's previous foster mom, who jumped at the chance to be a temporary home for Penny once again. The resilient pup has been happily residing in Olivia's home with her furry foster siblings, Reptar, Butters, and Mouse, since!

According to Olivia, Penny is an absolute dream in a home setting. She is crate-trained, potty-trained, and even treadmill-trained! Penny is a friend to dogs and people of all sizes and does great on leashed walks. Despite her hardships, Penny has remained the sweet, playful girl we've grown to love. She has a mountain of supporters behind her, all rooting for her to get the happily ever after she deserves!

If you're looking for a dog who has continuously proven her strength, resilience, and sweetness, please reach out to Kayla at Bailing Out Bentley to bring Penny home!
