Celebrate World Rabies Day with Us!

By Amy King

September 28th is World Rabies Day! This day is celebrated by animal shelters, veterinarians, and more each year to raise awareness and advocate for rabies elimination globally. The theme for this year’s World Rabies Day is one health, zero deaths, with the goal of reminding the global community that rabies elimination is possible. You can help achieve this goal by getting your furry friends vaccinated! According to the American Animal Hospital Association, puppies and kittens should be AT LEAST 12-16 weeks old before receiving their first Rabies vaccines. A second booster dose can be administered one year later, and subsequent doses can be administered every three years. This will help boost your pet's immunity against Rabies in the event they are ever exposed to the disease. HSVC Cares offers Rabies vaccines for only $5 at our low-cost vaccination clinics both on and off-site! Our next off-site vaccination clinic will be hosted by our friends at Kirby Subaru Ventura (6404 Auto Center Dr. Ventura, CA) on October 15th from 10 am - 2 pm. The next HSVC Cares walk-in vaccine clinic at the shelter, located at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai, CA, is on Thursday, October 20th, from 12:30 - 3:30. Join us at either event to receive $5 Rabies vaccines, FREE DHPP vaccines for dogs, and FREE FVRCP vaccines for cats! Call the shelter at 805-646-6505 with any questions. Our shelter would not be able to offer these vaccines at little to no cost to the public without the generosity of our supporters. This World Rabies Day, we ask you to celebrate with us by donating to the HSVC so we can continue providing these vital services. $5 Friday - Help Neglected Animals in Need

By Amy King

You can make a difference, right now! In August, our Humane Officers received a call regarding concern for several animals on a property. Upon arrival, they discovered multiple animals in need of immediate medical care. Our Humane Officers seized three horses, two of which were severely emaciated, and one emaciated sheep from the property. The animals were transported to the shelter and have been under the care of our diligent staff and veterinarian to receive the medical care they desperately need.

Join Us in Celebrating Responsible Dog Ownership Day!

By Amy King

September 17th is Responsible Dog Ownership Day! This day is celebrated each year as a way to get pet parents to ‘pawse’ and remember the promises they made to their ‘furever’ friends. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the well-being of your furry friend. From grooming to daily walks, the responsibilities required to properly care for a pup are infinite. We always remind our potential adopters that rescuing a shelter dog is a lifelong commitment. In return, you will get many years of puppy love, kisses, and joy from your pets!

Meaty Finds His Furever Home

By Amy King

We are so excited to share that Meaty, now Franky, has been adopted by Rachel! Judging by Franky's smile, we'd say he's pretty excited too! Two-year-old Franky was bought to the shelter by our Humane Officers as part of a humane investigation. Despite the situation he came from, Franky was immediately friendly with everyone and quickly became a staff favorite. We have no doubt he will continue to bring joy to new mom Rachel's life in his forever home! Congrats and happy tails, Franky!
