Join The Rescue Effect and Make a Difference!
When you adopt, you’re not just changing one life—you’re creating a ripple effect of hope, compassion, and second chances. That’s what #TheRescueEffect is all about. All September long, in partnership with our friends at the ASPCA, we're showcasing how one act of kindness can spread far beyond a single adoption. Every pet who finds their furever family opens up space for another animal in need. Every adoption inspires someone else to choose rescue, and every act of love makes our community stronger!
Most shelters across the country are full, with nearly six million dogs and cats entering shelters and rescues in 2024, and animals, especially dogs, are often staying longer in care before being adopted. The HSVC is no exception, as we have a full kennel of lovable, sweet, furry friends who have been at the shelter far longer than they deserve.
For example, HSVC's longest canine resident, Letty (pictured left), has been patiently waiting for a family for nearly 550 days. As a staff and volunteer favorite, her downfall has been her behavior when inside the kennel. Outside shelter walls, Letty is sweet, friendly, and playful. However, she exhibits a behavior commonly seen in shelters known as barrier aggression when in her kennel. This simply means that Letty does not like being on the other side of the fence when potential adopters are visiting her. We hope that participating in the ASPCA's #TheRescueEffect campaign will shine a light on dogs like Letty, giving them the chance they deserve to shine!
Choosing to adopt helps the animal you take home and supports many more by freeing up space and resources. Our shelter houses dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, and an array of wonderful personalities. From kittens that purr like motor boats to extra-large pups who are determined to sit on your lap, HSVC has countless furry friends waiting to find their family! If you aren’t able to adopt, temporarily fostering also helps free up space for other animals in need. Visit our foster page for more information about how you can join our foster team.
HSVC is open to visitors Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai. Stop by for a visit if you're ready to fall in love and make a difference in the life of an animal in need. Don't forget to check out our events calendar to see if we're hosting an adoption event near you soon! These events provide our staff with the opportunity to give adoptable animals time outside the shelter, allowing future adopters to see their personalities in a non-shelter setting. Whether you stop by the shelter in Ojai or visit an offsite adoption event, you can be a part of #TheRescueEffect this month!
