Ricky Bobby Finishes First in the Race to A Forever Home!

After 200+ days in the shelter, Ricky Bobby finally got the green flag he was looking for! The lovable pup hit the road for a cross-country journey, racing straight into the hearts of his new family. Now Johnny, the handsome 2.5-year-old rescue pup is having the time of his life. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our animal care staff and our friends from Outcomes for Pets Consulting for making this success story possible. Last but not least, thank you to Janine Takasugi for offering to transport Johnny across the country to his forever home!

Johnny was brought to the shelter on May 23rd, 2025, by Officers from the Santa Paula Police Department. At over 70 pounds, the large Border Collie mix struggled adjusting to shelter life. He quickly began showing signs of kennel stress, turning off potential adopters with his misunderstood behaviors in the kennel. Our staff knew he needed a special home and an even more special owner to see his potential.

In November 2025, Johnny got his first taste of what life could be like outside of the shelter. Kristin Hassen and Jenny Miller of Outcomes for Pets Consulting visited HSVC to learn more about the long-term resident they'd heard so much about. After earning his trust, they took the energetic pup on his first dog day out "field trip". He transformed into a completely different dog outside of the kennel walls! Gone was the scared, shut-down dog hiding in the back of his kennel, and in his place was a brave, loving adventure buddy ready to find a family of his own. Over the course of three day-long adventures, Johnny was able to relax, explore new places, and showcase what kind of dog he could be outside of the shelter. He even captured the heart of Jackson Galaxy, aka The Cat Daddy, who utilized his platform to find Johnny the loving family he desperately wanted.

With a forever family lined up in Ohio, the team got to work arranging transportation for Johnny's happily-ever-after. Janine Takasugi volunteered to make the three-day trek across the country, where Johnny's new parents, Olivia and Greg, were anxiously awaiting his arrival. The pair crossed several state lines along the way, being sure to document each new place with a photo and a thorough sniffing. They made it in record time, and Johnny is now feeling all the love from his new family!

Stories like these remind us of two important lessons: it takes a village, and don't judge a book by its cover. Johnny would not be where he is today, living his best life in Ohio, without the group of determined animal-lovers cheering him on along the way. They all saw past his exterior and had faith that this sweet, misunderstood pup was something special. We are so grateful to everyone who had a hand in this adoption success story. Congratulations, and happy tails, Johnny!
