We’re thrilled to share an extra-special adoption update this summer: Michelle has adopted another Max! That’s right, her home is now blessed with two Maxes, and both have stories that remind us of the power of patience, healing, and love. The newest member of Michelle’s family is a 10-year-old German Shepherd who came to us earlier this year through a heartbreaking neglect case. Humane Officers responded to a call in the field and brought Max into our care in early 2025. It was immediately clear he had been through a great deal. The neglected pup was suffering from a severe flea allergy that had caused painful skin infections and significant hair loss. His back legs showed signs of stiffness and arthritis, likely the result of long-term, untreated joint issues. Though he was clearly uncomfortable, Max’s gentle nature and soulful eyes told us everything we needed to know. He was a dog who hadn’t lost hope.

Max spent the next several months recovering in and out of foster homes with the help of oral antibiotics, medicated baths, flea treatment, and joint supplements. His coat began to regrow in patches, and his spirit, though never broken, began to shine through more and more each day. Despite the visible scars and the likelihood that his coat may never fully return to "normal," Max proved himself to be nothing short of extraordinary.

Michelle, a longtime HSVC volunteer and board member, first met Max during one of her regular visits to the shelter. She immediately saw this sweet soul needed some TLC and began spending time with Max each day she volunteered at HSVC. However, it wasn’t the first time she’d opened her heart to a dog in need. Back in July 2023, Michelle adopted another special pup named Max, a 4-year-old (at the time) Belgian Malinois who was surrendered in 2022. This Max came to us underweight and uncertain, but with Michelle's care and love, he blossomed into a confident, happy dog and found a best friend in her silver Lab, Murphy.

Almost exactly two years later, something familiar stirred in Michelle when she met 10-year-old Max. She saw through the patchy coat and stiff gait, recognizing a soul full of resilience, affection, and quiet strength. Their bond was instant, and soon after, Michelle made the decision we were all hoping for. She adopted Max. Now, Michelle’s home is a safe haven for not just one, but two Maxes, each with their own story of survival and redemption. Senior Max has traded shelter stress for soft beds, gentle walks, warm baths, and endless love. Her commitment to the animals who need extra care reminds us that every life has value, and that the love we give comes back tenfold.
