Help Support Rescue Horses

Five Dollar Friday is a weekly opportunity for our supporters to get a behind the scenes look at the care that goes into each animal and see how your generous donations help animals in need!

The Humane Society of Ventura County currently has six rescue horses in its care.

One of the things that makes the Humane Society of Ventura County so unique is its ability to house and rehabilitate neglected and abused horses and other livestock on its 4.4 acre property in Ojai. Over twenty percent of the facilities grounds are dedicated to the sheltering and care of these animals. During the Thomas Fire, the HSVC took in nearly 80 head of livestock as a sanctuary for those families impacted during the evacuations. This extra load was taxing on the Shelter's corral and barn. Although the HSVC managed without any serious issues, we realized that we could be better prepared and organized in the event we spring into emergency mode again.

If you have recently visited the shelter you probably noticed work being done down in our horse corrals. We completely revamped the two horse pasture areas and horse barn to increase capacity, ease our ability to accommodate a large number of animals in a short period of time and provide all the necessary care they require. Currently six rescue horses call the shelter home, however that number could increase substantially at a moments notice.

As anyone who cares for livestock knows, the cost of caring for the horses is high, and we estimate that the daily cost of six horses can exceed $100 a day. This amount includes their feed, water, veterinary care, farrier, and the staff necessary to give them the proper care. It is just as important for horses to receive training and socialization as it is for dogs and other domesticated animals, and the horses are worked with on a daily basis. At this time we are humbly requesting funds to help us purchase many of the smaller items that will make life for the horses in our care more comfortable, especially during the summer months. Please consider making a small donation today to our rescue horses!

By donating to the HSVC, you'll be part of a community of people who are making a positive impact on the lives of animals in need in Ventura County.
